M.Ángeles Jiménez (Madrid, Spain) achieved her B. Sc. Degree in Chemistry in 1983 (UAM, Madrid, Spain). Then, she joined Prof. M. Rico’s group (CSIC, Madrid), where she addressed NMR structural studies on α-helical peptides as models for the first stages of protein folding, which led her to get her Ph. D. in Chemistry in September 1987 (UAM, Madrid, Spain). As a post-doc (Univ. Leicester, UK), she focused on protein-ligand interactions. Coming back to Spain, as a junior researcher at CSIC, she initiated her work on the design of β-hairpin peptides with the initial aim of understanding the principles underlying β-hairpin folding and formation. Lately, she applies this knowledge to design peptides of therapeutic interest, such as bactericidal, antiviral, anti-tumour, analgesic, and immunogenic, and also trying to understand peptide/membrane interactions. In parallel, she is also interested in understanding the molecular basis of protein functionality. To this end, she uses NMR to determine the structures of globular proteins (e.g, bacterial CarA/CarS, CdnL, and CarD involved in transcriptional regulation; and human proteins related to hepatic diseases), to characterise intrinsically disordered domains (e.g, Histone H1, and CarD) and for biomolecular recognition studies (e.g. human cannabinoid receptor 1, CB1, and its interactors). In brief, her research fields are peptide design (α-helices, β-hairpins, and therapeutics), and protein structure and recognition by using solution NMR as the main tool. |
