S. Padmanabhan (Padhu) studied in IIT-Madras, India (M.Sc.-Chemistry) and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA (Ph.D.-Biochemistry on DNA-cation interactions with Prof. M. Thomas Record Jr). His post-doctoral research was on a-helix formation and stability (Prof. Robert Baldwin´s group, Dept. Biochemistry, Stanford University) and then on the structure, stability and folding of phage 434 Cro protein (Prof. Manuel Rico´s group, Instituto de Química Física "Rocasolano"(IQFR)-CSIC, Madrid, Spain). His current research on photosensory regulation and signal transduction in bacteria began as a Ramón y Cajal researcher (Prof. Francisco Murillo´s group, University of Murcia, Spain) and has continued as a Research Scientist (“Científico Titular”), then Senior Scientist ("Investigador Científico"), and as Professor at IQFR-CSIC. These studies uncovered: (a) the novel vitamin B12-based family of photoreceptors; (b) the long-sought lipid desaturase for plasmalogen biosynthesis conserved in aerobic bacteria and in animals including humans, and a signaling role for plasmalogens; (c) the bacterial RNA polymerase-binding CarD-CdnL family of global regulators and their modes of action;and (d) a novel, multifactorial control of the expression of a CRISPR-Cas system, which continue to be the focus of ongoing work.

 Funding
  • Padhu´s research as Principal Investigator has been funded uninterruptedly since 2002 by the Spanish National Research Plan (Ministries of Education/Science/Economy).
